The Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is the only certified adult CF program in the state to care for adults with cystic fibrosis. The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program and the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Program, at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, are the Arkansas Cystic Fibrosis Care Center which is accredited by the national Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The goal of the Adult CF Program is to provide state of the art care for adults with cystic fibrosis.

The UAMS Adult CF Program is a member of the Therapeutics Development Network (TDN) of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The TDN is a network of nearly 80 nationwide clinical research centers conducting a variety of trials to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new therapies for cystic fibrosis.

The UAMS Adult CF Program team includes a dietician, nurses, pulmonologists, a pharmacist, a psychologist, a respiratory therapist, a pulmonary function technician, and a social worker. On arrival to the clinic, you will check in at the reception desk, weigh in at the nurse’s station, and then be taken to your exam room where the pulmonary function technician will obtain your Pulmonary Function Test (PFT). Your PFT results are made available to the physician before he or she sees you in your exam room. At every CF clinic visit, you will be seen in your exam room by each member of the Adult CF Care Team.

When the need for an inpatient stay arises, CF patients are admitted to the UAMS Medical Center on the F8 unit. All hospital rooms are private and each room has extra room for a friend or family member to stay with you as you wish.  The rooms are equipped with a private bathroom and a flat screen television. Infection control precautions are enforced for staff and patients. While in the hospital, you will be followed by a team of physicians led by a pulmonologist. You will have visits from respiratory therapy, your nurse, a dietician and a social worker. All will monitor you during your stay in the hospital and help with discharge planning when the time comes to transition to home.

Adult CF clinic is held every Friday in the Pulmonary Clinic on the 2nd floor of the UAMS Outpatient Center.  If you need an appointment in the adult CF clinic at UAMS, please call one of our nurses at 501-296-1170 (ext 1244 or ext 1245) to schedule your appointment. We strive to see you in clinic at least four times a year.
